Solihull Flydressers was formed in 1974 in response to a local need to offer facilities for people to learn the art of fly dressing and to further their skills, and this is still the core of our Club. We meet each Monday evening, during the winter, at the Tom O' The Wood pub at Rowington where we hold three fly tying tables. Basic tying techniques, Advanced and current killer pattern Trout flies and Salmon & Sea Trout flies. The Club has a stock of materials and tools so newcomers can try before buying their own equipment. There is also a wealth of fishing experience on hand that can  help with problems or advice on all aspects of tying, fishing, tackle, tactics, venues, cooking and anything fishy.

Over the years our range of activities has increased to include fly fishing outings and annual social events.  These events include: Skittles evening, Burns Night Supper, Summer Barbecue, Christmas Dinner, Fishing Breakfasts, Early Season trip to a reservoir, 2 day summer trip to river and lake, late season Grayling trip and the annual Fish-Off at our home lakes.

We had in mind for some years the idea of a "Club fishery" and in 2000 we successfully negotiated the lease on the two lakes near Wootton Wawen for trout fishing.  We have also negotiated trout fishing on a small brook near Claverdon.  This is one and a quarter miles of wild brown trout fishing.  These two waters have seen our membership rise considerably.  Since then we have taken a lease on another trout lake near Ullenhall and a half mile of coarse fishing on the River Alne.                    We normally have either a full or almost a full membership.

We sometimes have fishing vacancies so if you are interested please email us.

Our Lakes are stocked with rainbow trout, although they also contain a few brown trout.  The fishing has been very successful with a return of around 1.5 fish for the average two hour session.  Clearly some months are more productive than others, especially when the evening rise is experienced.  The record fish caught is 9lb 7oz.  We have had several fish over 8lbs, with greater numbers as fish sizes reduce.  Most fish are between 2lbs and 3lbs 8oz.  The normal season’s average is around 2lb 8oz to 2lb 12oz.  Fish are in excellent condition and fight very well.

Our current charges, ratified at our AGM in January, are as follows:

Solihull Flydressers’ membership is £20 per year which covers fly tying and club events.

SFD membership is required before anyone can join the Fishing Section.

Full rod for fishing at any time £290 per season

One off joining fee £100 for fishing section

Fishing Section membership covers all waters.
